Abstract:
There is an increasing interest in ceramic materials with improved high temperature mechanical behavior for structural applications at high temperatures. Magnesium aluminate spinel is a very promising structural material for mechanical and thermal applications because of its excellent high-temperature properties such as strength, hardness and chemical stability. Though production of dense spinel product is a costly process, magnesium aluminate spinel is eco-friendly and is widely used commercially and industrially due to the health and environmental hazards posed by the alternatives. Spinel is mostly useful as refractory material and most commonly used in cement rotary kilns, the iron and steel industries and glass tank furnaces. This paper reviews in detail these three major applications of magnesium aluminate spinel and also many other refractory applications.
